The Isles of Shoals, a group of nine small islands located six miles off the coast on Portsmouth, New Hampshire, have had a significant impact on the history and culture of New England. Author Bardwell has drawn upon the collections of many institutions to select 350 choice and rare pictures of the islands. Many views relate to the Victorian age of the hotel era when many of the leading writers, musicians, and artists of day summered on Appledore, drawn by the cool breezes and the intellectual atmosphere developed by poet Celia Thaxter. Included is a portfolio of photographs by Peter E. Randall.
