Portsmouth native Tobias Lear (1762-1816) became George Washington's private secretary in 1786 and he was holding the first president's hand when Washington died in 1799. The only biography devoted to the Portsmouth native who was so close to many of the nation's founding fathers. The historic Tobias Lear house in Portsmouth is open to the public from late spring to early fall.
